When I have a field that contains for example
'John Doe' and I perform a search by that field writing 'Doe' in the search field, I get no matching records.
I've tried with *Doe and same happens, I get no matching records.

If you take a look at http://www.tonymarston.net/php-mysql/dialog-types.html#searc h1 you will see that the wild card characters used in SQL are '%' (percent) and '_' (underline). The '*' character has no meaning.
