The _cm_pre_updateMultiple() method is called just once so that you can manipulate ALL the occurrences in $fieldarray. Each occurrence is then passed to the updateRecord() method, so the _cm_pre_updateRecord() method is called separately for each occurrence.

It is up to you to decide which is the most appropriate place to put your code.

Are you sure that the selection string being passed from the MULTI4 to the UPDATE4 contains references to all the records which you selected? It should be in the format

(selection1='..') OR (selection2='..') OR (selection3='..')

If the string coming out of the MULTI4 is wrong then there is something in the MULTI4 which needs looking at. If the string coming out of the MULTI4 is correct then there is something in the UPDATE4 which is wrong.
